17-Year-Old Hockey Player Dies on Field

Nicholas Rotolo, aged 17, a Berkely student died on the field while playing hockey. His family has filed a case against the San Jose city and the head firm of the San Jose Sharks. They say that proper trained persons were not available to use an automated external defibrillator and hence it resulted in the death of their son.

Nicholas fainted on the field at the Logitech Ice in San Jose. He was a part of the San Jose Junior Sharks team. After fainting, he did not regain consciousness even once and later passed away at the San Jose Medical Center. His autopsy showed that arrhythmia, a condition that causes the heart rhythm to get disrupted was the cause of his death. Automated external defibrillators can be used to provide relief in such conditions.

The lawsuit was filed in the Santa Clara County Superior Court on March 18. The lawsuit said that the personnel present on the grounds did not even know that defibrillators were present in the stadium, and no one knew how to use it. Probably, if personnel had acted properly, they would have been able to save Nicholas’s life. The defendants in the case include the city of San Jose and Silicon Valley Sports and Entertainment, the parent company of San Jose Sharks.
